Fleury, Pierre-gildas; Chauvin, Jacky.

Chauvin, Jacky; Fleury, Pierre-gildas.

Fleury, Pierre-gildas; Le Gars, Jean-claude.

Dao, Jean-claude; Fleury, Pierre-gildas; Paquotte, Philippe.
The article is an excerpt from a focus document for understand scallop aquafarming's position. Studies on this species are part of IFREMER/DRV research programmes as an aquafarming as well as a halieutic resource. They are currently becoming reality through significant support for fishing management but also through experiments of semis of juveniles at various English Channel and Atlantic sites, to cite only the most applied operations. Fishing and shellfish farming professionals are closely associated with this programme. Scallop fishing occupies a prominent position this year in the press by reason of fishing and marketing problems due to intake being much higher than in past years. The situation matches the forecasts of IFREMER teams that have been...

Dao, Jean-claude; Fleury, Pierre-gildas; Paquotte, Philippe.
This document is made from reports of a working group joining together JFREMER biologists and economics to shape an economic evaluation of scallop Pecten maximus aquaculture. It lays out the synthesis of al1 available data on french scallop fisheries and market and takes stock of the farming technical results. The study also approaches the difficulties to implement this farming techniques and the problems linked with the development of a new aquacultural activity. This work contributes to determine the right research fields to cany out, to identify the projects which will be submitted to an economic analysis and to define the measures to take in order to allow an efficient technical transfer as well as a good sectorial survey

Fleury, Pierre-gildas; Dao, Jean-claude.
The scallop is a filtering mollusc that feeds predominantly on phytoplankton. It lives on loose beds of maerl, sand or mud, most often between 5 and 40 metres deep. The scallop likes cool (7° to 20°C) and well oxygenated ocean waters. It does not tolerate desalination or emersion out of water. In France, there are two very closely related species: Pecten maximus in the English Channel and the Atlantic and Pecten jacobaeus in the Mediterranean. These are frequent species in French coastal waters. But the many deposits, considerably exploited, have rather thinned out over the last 20 or 30 years.

Production costs in french scallop farming ArchiMer
Paquotte, Philippe; Fleury, Pierre-gildas.
(Not controled OCR) The French King scallop farming method (hatchery, intermediate culture in cages nnd sea-bed extensive ongrowing) has been developed since 1983. A multi-steps project analysis has been carried out to estimate the economic feasability of the rearing activity. Because there is no market for spat in France at the moment, the project concerns the whole production cycle from hatchery to harvest. The project is designed to supply 150 m.t. of maketable scallops, which is the expected French farmed production in the near future. The project analysis software developed by IFREMER provides the main financial criteria, i.e. internal rate of return, potential earning power, cash requirements and a breakdown of the production costs. The first...

Fleury, Pierre-gildas; Paquotte, Philippe.
This report is a technical and financial analysis of a project of a shellfish farm in open sea which diversifies with the implementation of a scallop activity. It lays out first the technical description of the project, its size and the choice of rearing standards. After the working out of investments, operating costs and expected receipts, the analysis deals with the marginal profitability of the scallop activity and the financial consequences of its implementation in the farm. Then, there is a discussion on the sensitiveness of the results to the variations of the technical and economic parameters and on different possible rearing strategies

Paquotte, Philippe; Fleury, Pierre-gildas.
The development of king scallop (Pecten maximus) culture in France has been subsidised by the State and the Brittany Region for the past 10 years. Technical progress has been made and the public authorities now wish to know if this activity is economically feasible. While continuing research to improve the performance of this type of shellfish culture (culture techniques and physiology), Ifremer (public institute for oceanological research) also undertook an economic assessment on costs, marketability and legal and social limitations. The study of the costs of production presented here was carried out by analysing a pilot farm. This approach helped detail the financial needs and the degree of profitability of scallop farming.

Paquotte, Philippe; Fleury, Pierre-gildas.

Dao, Jean-claude; Paquotte, Philippe; Fleury, Pierre-gildas.

Aquaculture production of scallop has been identified by a series of technical operations during the past ten years programme under a partnership involving the fishermen organizations with regional and national grants. 3 million juveniles have been produced annually, giving a potential recapture by fishing of 100 to 120 tonnes 3 years later. Results in terms of technical and economical approach have pointed out the principal unknown factors responsable for high costs. 7he pilot programme aims to increase the production to reach a level of 5 million juveniles to support the fishery of the rade de Brest and induce new management of the resources. Two priorities were selected, control of the reproduction in the hatchery to obtain reliable larval and...

A preliminary study of the behaviour and vitality of reseeded juvenile great scallops, of three sizes in three seasons ArchiMer
Fleury, Pierre-gildas; Mingant, Christian; Castillo, A.
In order to have a better understanding of recessing in great scallop, Pecten maximus and consequently the causes of mortality at reseeding, this study has monitored, at different seasons, the dispersion and recessing of different sizes of juveniles (about 15, 30 and 45 mm, called small, medium and large) after seeding. Moreover, the aim was to see when small spat (15 mm) could be seeded, and thus reduce the costs of intermediate culture. Three monitoring approaches were used together: (1) continual observations by remote video camera, of a defined area (less than 1 m2) containing 10 scallops from each size group; (2) daily monitoring of behaviour with divers along three bottom lines, with 20 × 1 m2 plots each and nine marked scallops per plot; and (3) the...

Fleury, Pierre-gildas; Paquotte, Philippe.
